Delivering a bespoke employee engagement strategy for Close Brothers

Close Brothers is a leading UK merchant banking group providing lending, deposit taking, wealth management services and securities trading. Established in 1878, Close Brothers Group employs approximately 4,000 people across 54 offices.It’s listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 250.

The Challenge

Close Brothers and UKSV have a long-standing partnership, having collaborated on a number of projects over the years. On this occasion, Close Brothers approached UKSV to create an employee engagement strategy that would support the roll-out and day-to-day delivery of its overall commercial strategy.

The company needed focused, relevant and timely internal communications, sharing best practices in real-time across the country in an engaging but cost-effective way.

Our task was to develop an effective but budget-conscious internal communications strategy that would motivate staff to deliver against company objectives and help reach overall business targets.

Our Approach

A bespoke internal comms campaign

After leading a series of workshops with key stakeholders and a team of representative employees from across the business, we were able to get a thorough understanding of the business strategy and to assess employees’ needs. This allowed us to recommend the most appropriate communication tools and formats going forward.

At the same time, we carried out a six-week audit of Close Brother’s existing communications channels to understand how effective the current engagement touch points were. We then presented our findings and recommendations alongside a proposed plan of action.

Considering the available budget and IT infrastructure, we created an internal communication plan that Close Brothers’ internal marketing team would be able to bring to life. 

The plan included concepts and content creation, design, local and national events, training and coaching in Intranet use, video creation, and an ‘employee of the month’ award.

The Results

Years later, the communication plan and channel recommendations are still in place, and Close Brothers is committed to this way of working going forward. 

Our communications team provides ongoing support through an annual review, and Close Brothers has hired two internal communications managers that we support on a weekly basis.

Our relationship with Close Brothers continues, with UKSV becoming a trusted strategic partner at every level of the business.
